Accuracy measures chart decisions, not winnings. Double fallbacks: Dh → hit; Ds → stand. Rh → hit when surrender is unavailable. This trainer keeps those actions available and does not simulate a completed hand.

Basic blackjack strategy tells you which decision has the best expected result for your hand, the dealer’s upcard and a specified set of rules. It helps reduce avoidable mistakes. It does not guarantee that you will win the next hand or finish a session ahead.

Go straight to the chart: hard totals, soft totals or pairs. Read the assumptions and key first: a chart for the wrong rules can give the wrong decision.

Check these rules before using the chart

This chart is for 4–8 decks, dealer stands on soft 17 (S17), doubling after splitting allowed (DAS), and an American-style dealer peek for blackjack. It assumes doubling on any initial two cards. Late surrender is shown where appropriate; use the stated fallback if it is unavailable.

The chart is a total-dependent basic strategy reference, not a card-counting system. It does not cover every unusual variant or composition-dependent exception. If the dealer hits soft 17, doubling after a split is prohibited, or the game uses no-hole-card rules, use a strategy calculator configured for those rules.

Check the blackjack payout too: a winning $10 natural at 3:2 earns $15 profit; at 6:5 it earns $12. A chart cannot restore the missing payout. Unfamiliar abbreviations are explained in our blackjack glossary.

How to read a basic blackjack strategy chart

1. Find the correct hand type. Use the pairs table for a pair eligible to split. Otherwise use the soft table when an ace counts as 11, or the hard table when it does not.
2. Find the dealer’s upcard. The columns run from 2 through ace. A dealer jack, queen or king uses the 10 column.
3. Read the action at the intersection. Check the key below, including the fallback for doubling or surrender.
4. Reassess after a hit. Your total can change from soft to hard. Doubling or surrender may no longer be available after taking a card.

If splitting is unavailable, treat the hand as a hard or soft total. Split aces may receive only one card, so follow the table’s restrictions rather than assuming every action remains available.

Chart key

• H — Hit.
• S — Stand.
• Dh — Double if allowed; otherwise hit.
• Ds — Double if allowed; otherwise stand.
• P — Split.
• Rh — Surrender if allowed; otherwise hit.

Dh and Ds are different. If you cannot double soft 18 against a dealer 6, Ds means stand. If you cannot double hard 11 against a dealer 6, Dh means hit.

Hard totals

A hard total has no ace counted as 11. “8 or less” applies after you have checked for an eligible pair. Rh applies only when surrender is allowed for that hand.

Soft totals

The number in brackets is the total. For example, A,7 is soft 18. A multi-card soft 18 uses the same total row, but the double option may be unavailable; follow Ds.

Pairs

Pair decisions above assume doubling after splitting is allowed. The 8,8 row takes precedence over the hard-16 row when splitting is available under these rules.

Four decisions that often cause confusion

Hard 16 against a dealer 10

With an original 9 + 7, the chart says Rh: surrender if late surrender is available; otherwise hit. This is not a prediction that hitting will win. It is the preferred decision on average for the stated rules.

Ace + 7 against a dealer 6

This is soft 18. The chart says Ds: double if permitted, otherwise stand. Confusing this fallback with hit is an easy error when a chart labels every double simply “DD”.

Two 8s against a dealer 10

Use the pair row, not just the combined total of 16. The chart says split for the stated S17, DAS and dealer-peek rules. Do not transfer that answer to a different rule set without checking.

Two 9s against a dealer 7

The chart says stand on 18. Two 9s against an 8 or 9 are split instead. A pair alone does not make splitting the preferred play.

Practise decisions, not betting progressions

Start with the rules guide if the actions are new. Then use our free practice table to learn the controls. Before applying this chart in any game, compare that game’s rules with the assumptions above.

Try ten practice hands and record the hand, dealer upcard, chart action and your action. Review decision errors rather than judging the chart by whether those ten hands won. Short runs can vary widely even when decisions are correct.

Basic strategy chooses how to play a hand. It does not prescribe increasing bets after losses, and a betting progression does not change the underlying game rules. Use a fixed entertainment limit; our bankroll guide discusses limits in more detail.

Card counting is a separate topic involving information about dealt cards. It is not required to read this chart. If you want to consult a chart at a live table, ask the venue about its rules rather than assuming every venue has the same policy.

Frequently asked questions

Does basic blackjack strategy guarantee a win?

No. It selects decisions by expected value under stated rules. Individual hands and sessions can still lose, and the house edge depends on the rules and play.

Can I use this chart at an H17 table?

This is an S17 chart. H17 means the dealer hits soft 17, which changes some decisions. Use a chart configured for H17 and the rest of your table’s rules.

What if I cannot double or surrender?

Dh means hit if doubling is unavailable; Ds means stand. Rh means hit if surrender is unavailable. A rule that prohibits doubling after splitting also changes some pair decisions, so use a no-DAS chart for that table.

Is soft 18 always a standing hand?

No. In this chart A,7 stands against 2, 7 and 8; doubles against 3–6 when allowed, otherwise stands; and hits against 9, 10 and ace.

Is online blackjack strategy different?

The rules determine the chart, not the screen or location. Match deck count, soft-17 rule, doubling, surrender and dealer-peek rules before using a strategy online or at a physical table.
