Surrender ends your hand in exchange for losing half the original bet. It is useful when that fixed half-bet loss is better than the expected result of playing on. It is not simply a way to avoid an uncomfortable hand, and the correct choices depend on the rules.
What happens to your money?
If you surrender a $20 wager, $10 is returned and $10 is lost. The hand is finished. A later dealer bust does not turn it into a win.
| Outcome | Returned including stake | Net result |
|---|---|---|
| Surrender | $10 | −$10 |
| Ordinary loss | $0 | −$20 |
| Push | $20 | $0 |
| Ordinary 1:1 win | $40 | +$20 |
The question is expected value, not just the percentage of hands that lose. Pushes and the amounts won or lost matter too. Surrender is preferable when all available continuation choices have an expected loss greater than half the original stake.
Early versus late surrender
| Type | When it applies | Dealer blackjack |
|---|---|---|
| Late surrender | After any required blackjack check; before you act | A dealer blackjack defeats the late-surrender option |
| Early surrender | Before dealer blackjack is ruled out | Can forfeit half rather than lose the whole wager, subject to the offered rules |
Do not apply a late-surrender chart to an early-surrender game. Check the game’s help panel for availability, timing and any restrictions against an ace. A missing or disabled button may reflect the current hand or stage, so read the rules rather than assuming the entire game lacks surrender.
Late-surrender decisions: S17 and H17
Scope: four to eight decks, American dealer-peek rules, double after split allowed, and late surrender offered against all upcards. S17 means the dealer stands on soft 17; H17 means the dealer hits it. These are total-dependent basic-strategy choices for the initial two cards. Check the pair row for 8–8 before using the hard-16 rule.
| Your hand | Dealer upcard | S17 | H17 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hard 15 | 10 | Surrender | Surrender |
| Hard 15 | Ace | Hit | Surrender |
| Hard 16, excluding 8–8 | 9, 10 or ace | Surrender | Surrender |
| Hard 17 | Ace | Stand | Surrender |
| 8–8 | Ace | Split | Surrender |
| 8–8 | 9 or 10 | Split | Split |
For other hands, use the appropriate complete strategy chart. Deck count, European no-hole-card rules and different surrender restrictions can change the recommendation. Our basic strategy charts state their rules explicitly.
If surrender is unavailable
| Situation | Fallback action | Rule context |
|---|---|---|
| Hard 15 versus 10 | Hit | S17 or H17 |
| Hard 15 versus ace | Hit | H17 surrender choice |
| Hard 16 versus 9, 10 or ace, excluding 8–8 | Hit | S17 or H17 |
| Hard 17 versus ace | Stand | H17 surrender choice |
| 8–8 versus ace | Split | H17 surrender choice |
“Surrender otherwise hit” is not universal. Hard 17 uses a stand fallback; the pair of eights uses a split fallback under these rules.
Two hands that look similar but play differently
10–6 against a dealer 10: with the stated rules, surrender the $20 wager and recover $10. If surrender is unavailable, hit.
8–8 against a dealer 10: the total is also 16, but splitting is the preferred action under these rules. It requires a second wager equal to the first. Learn the restrictions in our splitting guide.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using an H17 recommendation at an S17 table without checking the difference.
- Treating a three-card 16 as eligible after you have already hit; ordinary late surrender is an initial-decision option.
- Surrendering every weak hand rather than comparing the correct expected-value choice.
- Choosing a game solely because it offers surrender while ignoring the blackjack payout and other rules.
Ask the dealer how to request surrender at a physical table; procedures can differ. Online, check the rules and use the displayed action when eligible. Surrender reduces the cost of certain bad situations; it cannot guarantee a profitable session.
Frequently asked questions
Should I always surrender 16 against a 10?
For a non-pair hard 16 under the stated multi-deck rules, surrender when eligible. A pair of eights is split against 10. If surrender is unavailable, use the relevant fallback.
Can I surrender after hitting?
Not under the ordinary late-surrender rule described here. It is an option on the initial two-card hand before another action. Variants may have different rules.
Should I surrender 17 against an ace?
In the H17 configuration above, surrender hard 17, otherwise stand. In the S17 configuration, stand. A soft 17 is a different hand.
Does surrender mean I get my whole bet back?
No. You recover half and lose half. On a $20 wager, the return is $10.
Does early surrender use the same chart?
No. The timing relative to dealer blackjack changes the expected values and strategy. Use a chart for the exact early-surrender rules.
